Colposcopy examination. Doctor examining a woman's reproductive system. This colposcopy procedure is usually used to study the cervix (the neck of the uterus). The instrument at centre has opened the vaginal passage, allowing the cervix to be examined for abnormalities. Colposcopy is mainly used to diagnose cervical cancer, which may be successfully treated if it is found early. Other conditions, including some sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), may also be diagnosed by this method.
