Caption

Diffraction pattern formed by laser light passed through cloth. This shows that, in some instances, light can be considered a wave. Passing through narrow holes in the weave of the cloth, the light diffracts (spreads out). This diffracted light then overlaps to produce interference effects that form the pattern seen. The light can constructively or destructively interfere with itself, producing red or black areas respectively. These effects correspond with those expected from waves.
