Contraceptive pill. Artwork of the action of an oral contraceptive pill on the female reproductive system. The pill's synthetic versions of hormones (molecules, centre left) target the hypothalamus in the brain (red dot, upper right), stopping the pituitary gland (enlarged, upper left) from producing sex hormones. This prevents the monthly release (ovulation) of an egg from the ovaries (cutaway, lower left). Although the oral pill is an extremely effective form of contraception, it has been associated with weight gain, depression and blood clots.
