Historical cupping kit. The metal cups were heated and placed rim down onto the skin. As the air trapped inside them cooled and contracted, the resulting partial vacuum pulled the skin upwards into the cup. Blood was also drawn to the area, and it was believed that this removed harmful excess blood from diseased organs nearby. In wet cupping, the skin was cut and blood that flowed into the cup was removed.
