Iron lung, 1940. A man inside an iron lung or ventilator. The iron lung mechanically moves air in and out of the lungs when the patient is incapable of breathing for themselves, for example if they are paralysed. Photographed at the Scots Mission Hospital in Tiberias, Israel, in March 1940.
