Human heart and lungs. Coloured historical artwork of the structures of the heart & lungs and their blood vessels. Coming down from top centre is the windpipe (trachea) that conveys air into the lungs where gas exchange takes place. The lungs (left & right) have been cut-away to show their veins (red) and arteries (blue). The heart (lower right) pumps blood through three circulatory systems. These are the coronary (heart), the pulmonary (lung) and the systemic (body) systems. The main artery (aorta, red, upper centre) and main vein (vena cava, blue, centre left) carry blood to and from the body respectively. Taken from a 19th century German illustration.
