Dwarfism. Historical portrait of a couple who have the medical condition known as dwarfism. Dwarfism is caused by hereditary disorders, a deficiency of growth hormone, or a lack of the metabolism- controlling thyroid hormones. This is the marriage picture, from 1863, of Charles Stratton (General Tom Thumb) and Lavinia Warren. It is recorded that the groom was 31 centimetres in height.
