Plaque house. Illustration of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), French military leader, visiting a plaque house for French soldiers. The illustration reflects the crowded conditions for patients in medical establishments at the time. Unlike Napoleon, his assistant (at left) is afraid of catching the plaque and is covering his mouth with a cloth. It was commonly thought at the time that disease was spread by bad smells or miasma and that a cloth soaked in sweet-smelling perfume could prevent infection.
