Fighting the plague. Firemen in Honolulu, Hawaii using hoses to protect buildings either side of the house of a bubonic plague victim. The house has been deliberately set on fire in an effort to prevent the disease from spreading further. Plague is caused by the bacterium Pasteurella pestis, which is transmitted in the rat flea. It comes in three forms: bubonic, pneumonic and septicimic. Historically bubonic plague has caused vast epidemics and pandemics, killing millions.
