Caption

A doctor vaccinating a child against smallpox, after a painting by Desbordes in 1820. The doctor is seen inspecting the pustules that have resulted from the cowpox virus introduced into the patient. Cowpox is a mild viral disease, similar to the often fatal smallpox. This similarity allows cowpox antibodies to be produced which confer immunity against smallpox.
