Advertisement for "Mrs.Winslow's Soothing Syrup", a patent medicine of the late 19th century. The syrup contained morphine, and was used as a cure for teething troubles in infants. Such patent medicines used a variety of drugs such as morphine, and were known later to induce dependency. The manufacture of patent medicines was abundant in the USA until firm restrictions were legislated in the early 20th century.
