Caption

Doctor bleeding a patient. Illustration of a 16th century doctor practising bloodletting on a female patient. Doctors at this time followed Greek theories of medicine, explaining diseases in terms of imbalances of "humours" (bodily fluids). Bleeding was often used in an attempt to restore this balance. Bloodletting was practiced in Europe until the late 19th century. Artwork by Jean Droit, c. 1930.
