Dental instruments. Surgical dental instruments used 'to pull out, cut and file superfluous teeth' from A Discourse of the Whole Art of Chyrurgery (1654) by Peter Lowe. Though 17th century dentists had devised many surgical techniques for the repair and removal of teeth, there was little advice for the prevention of tooth decay. Patients might be advised to wash their mouth out with water each morning, but this was intended to prevent smelly breath rather than tooth decay.
