Birth scene from Eucharius Rosslin's Der Swangern Frawen und Hebammen Rosegarten (A Rose Garden for Pregnant Women and Midwives), published in 1513. Rosslin was a physician in Frankfurt-am-Main. The book ran to three editions in its first year & was translated into Dutch, Czech, French, Danish, Latin and English (1540). It was the most important early printed work on gynaecology and obstetrics written for women readers. The English translation was reprinted until 1676. The illustration shows a pregnant woman on a birthing stool with two midwives in attendance.
