Caption

Childbirth illustrations. At left, the full-term baby has been developing for nine months (37-40 weeks) and now has hair. At full-term, the baby will be around 55 centimetres long and weigh about 3-3.5 kilograms. It is curled up (the foetal position) with its head pointing downwards ready to exit through the birth canal (vagina). The umbilical cord is seen near its neck, which can be dangerous. The mother's backbone (sectioned) is at left. Forceps are sometimes used in childbirth to grasp the head and gently assist the birth. From a 1786 US book on childbirth by Smellie and Norman.
