Caption

Flying birds. Coloured historical artwork of birds in flight by the Italian artist and scientist Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). The patterns of the birds' flight can be seen, with some notes at lower left. The notes are in mirror handwriting, which he used to keep his work secret. Da Vinci realised the importance of precise scientific obs- ervation. His interest in bird flight influenced some of his designs for flying machines.
