Woman's skeleton. Artwork of a woman showing part of her skeleton. The internal tissue of one of her breasts (yellow) and the muscles (red) of her shoulder and upper arm are also seen. The 206 bones of the skeleton provide protection and support. The ribs are partially visible in the chest. At lower right, the spine joins onto the pelvis. Long bones provide support and make up the arms and legs. The humerus (upper-arm bone), from the shoulder, articulates with the radius and ulna at the elbow. Similarly, the femur (thigh-bone), from the pelvis, meets the fibula (not seen) and tibia at the knee.
