Mollusc shell, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The shell of a mollusc is a tough exoskeleton formed from calcium carbonate (aragonite or calcite). It evolved as a protective barrier to predators. Magnification: x5348 when printed 10 centimetres high.
