Caption

Compact bone: false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of isolated lamellae, or sheets, of calcified bone. Such lamellae are arranged concentrically in the Haversian systems (or osteons) that comprise the structural units of compact bone. Bone is formed by osteoblasts as a matrix of collagen fibres & ground substances that are subsequently mineralised. In each Haversian system, between 4 and 20 lamellae surround a central canal, which houses the blood vessels that supply nutrients. Within each lamella, the collagen fibres are arranged in parallel. Magnification: x600 at 6x7cm size.
