Compact bone. Light micrograph of a transverse section through compact long bone. The Haversian canal (HC, white circle) contains nerves, blood and lymphatic vessels (not seen). Concentric bony layers, the lamellae (brown rings), enclose the HC. Together an HC and its lamellae form a Haversian system. Osteocytes, cells that as osteoblasts formed the lamellae, are now trapped in spaces called lacunae (brown, oval). Between adjacent lacunae and the HC are numerous interconnecting canals, the canaliculi (fine black lines). The canaliculi allow circulation of tissue fluid and diffusion of metabolites. Magnification x125 at 6x7cm size.
