Caption

Compact bone. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a freeze-fractured sample of compact bone from a knee joint. This type of bone is found in the walls of bones. The fracture plane has revealed channels (black, one at lower left) that may be lacunae, spaces that hold osteocytes, the cells responsible for the maintenance and growth of bone tissue. Magnification: x50 at 6x7cm size.
