Spongy bone. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of human spongy (cancellous) bone. This sort of bone is found inside a dense shell of hard compact bone. It consists of a network of hard bars (trabeculae) separated by interconnected spaces. These are filled with bone marrow (not seen), which manufactures blood cells. Magnification: x1215 when printed 10cm wide.
