Bones start as flexible cartilage, which over time hardens into the rigid form that supports and shapes the body. In compact bone, which forms the long bones, concentric circles of bony material surround large channels that contain blood vessels, lymph vessels, and nerves. The sturdy but normally porous structure of a healthy bone can be weakened and leached away if its calcium content is not maintained. SEM x 425.
