False-colour X-ray of a normal human foot, seen in side view. The lower bones of the leg are visible: the tibia (the large one) & the fibula. The seven small bones which comprise the ankle joint & beginning of the foot are called the tarsus; the large heel bone is known as the calcaneus. The next group of bones (running parallel to the foot) are the metatarsals; these join with the phalanges, the toe bones. The bones of the foot are held together by strong ligaments & musculotendinous attachments.
