Caption

Ribs. Close up of the rib cage of a female human skeleton. Several flat curved ribs are seen. These form a protective cage around the heart, lungs and other underlying organs. There are 12 pairs of ribs, each joined at the back of the rib-cage to the vertebrae of the spine (visible in image background). The ribs have muscles, nerves and blood vessels around them in the human body to expand and relax the chest during breathing.
