Spine. Artwork of the human spine superimposed on the profile of a young girl. The spine (vertebral or spinal column) consists of 33 vertebral bones (brown). Seven cervical vertebrae occur in the neck; 12 thoracic vertebrae occur in the thorax; 5 lumbar vertebrae in the lower back; the pelvis contains five fused sacral and four fused coccyx vertebrae. Since the spine supports the trunk and head, and encloses the spinal cord, injury or disease or malformation can be debilitating and painful. Spinal problems include slipped disc, osteoporosis, kyphosis, arthritis and spinal nerve damage.
