Femur. Artwork showing the femur and bones in the thigh superimposed on an outline of the upper leg. The femur (blue, centre) is the longest bone in the human body, and forms the upper part of the leg. At its upper end, the hip, it forms a ball and socket joint with the pelvis (upper centre). At its lower end, the knee, it forms a hinge joint with the tibia (shin bone, bottom centre). The knee is protected by the patella (triangular, lower centre). The ball at the top of the femur is attached to the main length of bone by the "neck" of the femur. This neck is the thinnest part of the bone, and a common site for fractures.
