Knee joint. Computer artwork of a healthy human knee joint, seen from the front. Bones are yellow. The femur (thigh-bone, at top) forms a hinge-joint with the tibia (shin-bone, at bottom), at the knee. The patella or kneecap (oval, at upper centre) is a protective bone at the front of the knee held in position by muscles and tendons. Two discs of cartilage cover the surfaces of the femur and tibia, reducing friction between them.
