Caption

Hip joint. Light micrograph of a section through bone tissue from a human hip. The entire hip joint is seen. The head (round) of the femur (thigh bone that runs down to lower right) forms the ball of a ball-and-socket joint. It is seen fitting into its socket (upper left) in the pelvis. The fine detail of the mesh of bone tissue is revealed by the thin slice of tissue used here. The two hip joints link the legs to the body, while still allowing them to move freely in walking. Brightfield illumination.
