Hip joint. Coloured X-ray of the bones (brown) of a normal hip joint, seen from the front. Pelvic bones are at upper left, and the upper part of the thigh bone (femur) is at lower right. The hip joint is where the two meet. The head of the femur (round area, lower centre) fits into a socket in the hip bone (the coxal) of the pelvis. This type of joint is known as a ball-and-socket joint, the ball being the head of the femur.
