Human skull. View of a human skull lit with a rosy pink light. The skull is the bony skeleton of the head. It consists of the cranium which encloses and protects the brain, & the facial bones which include the mandible (lower jaw) & cavities for the nose and eyes (orbits). All the 22 skull bones (except the mandible) are connected by immovable joints called sutures. Several of the skull bones contain sinuses (air-filled spaces). In addition, there are spaces in the temporal bones that house the structures of the middle and inner ear.
