Caption

Skull. X-ray of a human skull seen from the side. The face is at right. At upper centre is the large cranium which encloses the brain. The jaw (lower right) houses numerous teeth. The vertebrae of the neck can be seen at lower left (grey). All the bones of the skull, apart from the mandible (jaw-bone) and facial bones, are fused together to form a solid structure that protects the brain. The neck vertebrae support the head, and provide protection for the spinal cord (not seen) which connects the brain to the rest of the body.
