Human skull. X-ray of a human skull, seen from the front. At top is the rounded cranium which houses the brain. Teeth are seen in the upper and lower jaws, some of which have metal amalgam fillings, which show up white on the X-ray. In mammals the skull consists of 22 bones fixed together by rigid joints called sutures. Together, these bones provide protection for the brain, support for the organs of sight, smell and hearing, and anchor points for the lower jaw, or mandible.
