Chimpanzee skull. Coloured X-ray of a side view of the skull (yellow) of a chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes. The cranium (brain-case) at upper right is considerably smaller than in humans. It consists of many spongy bones (pink) fused at sutures (red, one seen at upper left of cranium). Chimpanzees have prominent brow ridges (at upper left) above their eyes. The large mandible bone (lower jawbone, at lower left) has powerful chewing muscles attached to it. Chimpanzees feed largely on fruit with their flat molar teeth grinding down this vegetable matter.
