Caption

Hyena skull. View of the skull of a hyena, Crocuta crocuta. This carnivorous mammal has sharp canine teeth at the front of its powerful jaw. The upper part of the skull, the cranium (upper right), encloses the brain, protecting it from injury. Hyenas live on the plains of eastern and southern Africa. There they feed on carrion and larger herbivores which they hunt in packs. In addition to being able to crush bone, their teeth are used in seizing and bringing down prey by biting into the lower legs and flanks.
