Head and shoulder muscles. Computer-enhanced historical engraving of a male figure in front view, showing superficial muscles of the head, neck and chest. These skeletal muscles can be seen in accurate detail. Skeletal muscles are attached by tendons to bones of the skeleton. Also known as voluntary muscles, they are under direct conscious control. Skeletal muscle accounts for up to 45 per cent of body weight. This drawing appeared in the book: Anatomia per uso degli studiosi (1816) by Paolo Mascagni. Mascagni (1755- 1815) was a celebrated Italian anatomist.
