Light micrograph of visceral muscle cells, commonly known as smooth or involuntary muscle. This type of muscle is found in structures such as blood vessels, the gastro-intestinal tract, the uterus & the bladder. These muscles produce slow long term contractions & are under the control of the autonomic nervous system & a variety of hormones. Individual cells are spindle-shaped with pointed ends. They contain one elongated & centrally placed nucleus per cell. Mag: X160 (at 35mm size).
