Caption

Muscle fibres. Coloured scanning electron micrograph showing a bundle of skeletal muscle fibres (red) together with collagenous connective tissue fibres (yellow bottom right). The nuclei of the muscle fibres occupy a peripheral position along the fibres and are seen here as small bulges. Two nuclei (yellow-green lower centre) have been exposed in the central fibre. Skeletal muscles are responsible for the movement of the skeleton and organs such as the tongue and the globe of the eye. Each fibre is surrounded by a thin layer of connective tissue known as endomysium. Magnification: x330 at 6x7cm size.
