Smooth muscle in human oviduct. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the human oviduct, showing smooth muscle. The oviduct or Fallopian tube is the channel which conducts the female egg from the ovary (where it is formed) to the uterus where the fertilized egg develops into an embryo. Bands of smooth muscle (pink) are seen in the oviduct wall, which by their peristaltic action push the egg down the oviduct. On their surface are flattened fibroblast cells (yellow), connective tissue cells which secrete long fibres of collagen (yellow). Magnification: x270 at 6x7cm size.
