Heart tissue. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through the myocardium muscle and endocardium of the heart. The myocardium is composed of heart (cardiac) muscle cells (pink, running top to bottom). Each cell contains 1-2 centrally located nuclei (purple, rounded). The endocardium is the innermost layer of the heart. It consists of an endothelial lining and supporting connective tissue. The endothelium (far right, pale pink) is a single layer of flattened epithelial cells. The connective tissue contains the heart's blood and nerve supply. Haematoxylin and eosin stained. Magnification x64 at 35mm size.
