Heart muscle. Coloured transmission electron micr- ograph (TEM) of a section through healthy human heart (cardiac) muscle cells. Mitochondria (red) fill the cytoplasm (pink) and a large nucleus (green) is visible at lower centre. The cells' muscle fibres are divided into contractile units called sarcomeres by dark discontinuous Z lines running from upper right to lower left. A capillary at lower right contains a red blood cell (red rectangle). The nucleus of the endothelial cell that lines the capillary is above the blood cell (green). Another capillary at bottom left contains a white blood cell (yellow & pink). Magnification: x2,800 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x9,800 at 8x10' size.
