Caption

Skeletal muscle. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of skeletal muscle. The banding pattern is due to strands of the contractile proteins. These run from left to right. The yellow areas are the thin actin fibres, with the brown areas comprising both the actin fibres and thicker myosin fibres. Muscles contract when actin slides over myosin. Skeletal muscles are those under the conscious control of the brain. The green bodies in the muscle are mitochondria, which provide energy for the contractions. Magnification unknown.
