Skeletal muscle. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through contracted skeletal (striated) muscle. The red and white bands are the contractile units, comprising fibres of the proteins actin and myosin, which slide over each other during contraction. The energy for the contractions is provided by mitochondria (rounded dark bodies). Skeletal muscle is under conscious control. Magnification: x15,000 at 35mm size.
