Striated muscle. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a freeze-fractured striated, or skeletal, muscle fibre. Individual myofibrils of the fibre are visible, running diagonally from lower left to upper right. The bands (white) of the sarcoplasmic reticulum membranes run at right angles to the myofibrils. Skeletal muscle is under voluntary control and moves long skeletal bones. Magnification: x1000 at 6x7cm size.
