Transmission electron micrograph of striated muscle showing the boundary between two muscle cells cutting across the picture. An elongated nucleus lies immediately beneath the sarcolemma or plasma membrane of the cell marking the boundary. Striated muscle cells are multinucleated with the nuclei always pressed against the inner surface of the sarcolemma. Muscle cells are filled with long myofibrils of two types; thick dark bands which are myosin filaments (A bands) & lighter bands which are actin filaments (I bands). It is thought that the thick & thin filaments slide over each other under the influence of energy released from ATP, thereby causing the muscle to contract.
