Foot tendons. Anatomical artwork of the muscles (brown) and tendons (green) of the foot. The foot is shown from the exterior side (upper left), the interior side (lower centre) and from behind (upper right). The bones are also shown (grey), and the ligaments (purple) holding them together. At upper left, tendons are seen extending towards each toe. These tendons are controlled by muscles in the leg. At upper right, the calcaneous (heel bone) is attached to the calf muscle, in the back of the lower leg, by the Achilles tendon, the largest tendon in the body. Tendons and ligaments are bands of inelastic fibrous tissue. Tendons connect bones to muscle, while ligaments connect bones to other bones.
