Cartilage cell. Coloured transmission electron mi- crograph (TEM) of a section through a chondrocyte (cartilage cell, centre) from the hyaline cartila- ge that forms rings around the trachea (windpipe). Large lipid droplets (yellow) and rough endoplasmic reticulum (pale strands) lie in the granular cytoplasm surrounding the nucleus (brown/orange). Chondrocytes are derived from the chondroblast cells which secrete the dense matrix of glycoprotein cement and collagen fibres (pink) that form cartilage. Chondrocytes are chondroblasts that have become trapped in the matrix and help to maintain the tissue. Magnification unknown.
