Elastic cartilage. Light micrograph (LM) of intercelluar elastic cartilage fibres. Elastic cartilage is a firm, flexible connective tissue, which maintains the shape of the outer ear and epiglottis. Elastic cartilage comprises living cells called chondrocytes (white areas containing purple dots), which are surrounded by extracellular matrix containing elastin fibres.
