Firm, compact cartilage composes the framework of such discrete structures as the nose, ears, and trachea; sculpts and sleeks the ends of bones; cushions joints; and forms sheaths and capsules like those surrounding the knee. When collagen, the protein constituent of cartilage, is bundled and packed together like twisted rope, it becomes sinew or tendon, strapping bone to muscle and muscle to muscle. Packed in layers or sheets and interwoven with elastin, a protein that can stretch and contract, collagen becomes resilient like a bungee cord, or like ligaments that join bone to bone.
