Blood circulation. Illustration of the blood circulation of the human torso. Arteries, which carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the body, are coloured red. Veins, which return deoxygenated blood to the heart, are blue. The heart is at upper centre with the blood vessels of the lungs on either side. From top to bottom the other organs shown are: the liver (directly below the heart), the two kidneys and the colon. The organs are transparent to give a clearer view of the blood vessels. The average adult has about five litres of blood. At rest this volume of blood is pumped through the heart and around the body each minute.
